Seven Empty Deposit Envelopes Showed What Was Happening At Carters Diner
The three kitchen helpers and Sarah walked out to the front, their faces curious as they saw the empty register stools where Troy and Megan usually sat.
“Troy and Megan won’t be working here anymore,” Carter said, his gravelly voice carrying clearly over the sound of the sizzling grill.
Sarah looked at the empty counter, then at Henry, who was still standing near the pie case.
“Are we getting a new morning crew?” Sarah asked.
“We are,” Carter said. “But we are also making some changes to how we run the evenings.”
He turned to look at Henry, who was slowly adjusting his posture, his hands still holding the small green slip of paper.
“Starting tonight, Henry is our new evening manager,” Carter said, his voice firm and clear. “He’ll be overseeing the closing shifts and making sure the building is locked up right.”
Sarah’s face lit up, a wide smile breaking across her tired face as she began to clap her hands together.
Dave banged his metal spatula twice against the edge of the grill, the sharp metal ring echoing through the kitchen pass-through.
