Seven Empty Deposit Envelopes Showed What Was Happening At Carters Diner
“The deadline is tomorrow afternoon,” Carter said, his voice quiet and gravelly. “That gives us exactly twenty hours to get the physical records.”
“If we don’t have those register tapes, the digital logs stand as they are,” Miller said. “And right now, those digital logs say Henry Lawson took the money.”
Linda looked up from her screen, her mouth set in a thin, hard line.
“We know Henry didn’t do it,” Linda said. “We have the security footage of Troy using Henry’s terminal while Henry was outside with the trash.”
“The corporate board doesn’t look at video footage first,” Miller said. “They look at the ledger discrepancies and the employee ID numbers on the voided slips.”
Carter stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the gravel alley behind the Decatur office.
“The physical slips are still in that building,” Carter said. “Troy wouldn’t have destroyed them yet because he needs them to verify his own split with Megan.”
“How can you be sure of that?” Miller asked.
“Because Troy is greedy, but he is also lazy,” Carter said. “He wants to make sure Megan isn’t taking more than her share of the cash before they lay the whole thing on Henry.”
