Seven Empty Deposit Envelopes Showed What Was Happening At Carters Diner

“We need to know how far back this goes,” Carter said.

“I ran the reports for September,” Linda said. “It is not just a few dollars here and there. The spreadsheet was filled with long columns of red text, each line representing a transaction that had been deleted from the system after the customer had already paid and left.”

Carter leaned closer to the screen, his eyes following the dates.

“At twelve-fourteen last Tuesday, Henry was behind the building,” Carter said. “I watched him carry three bags of wet coffee grounds to the dumpster.”

“The log shows his ID voided a twenty-eight dollar ticket for table six at twelve-fifteen,” Linda said.

“And Henry was still outside,” Carter said. “He was leaning against the brick wall to rest his back.”

Linda clicked another tab, opening the logs from the previous Thursday.

“Here is another one,” she said. “A forty-two dollar cash sale for four prime rib specials. Voided under zero-four at exactly one-thirty.”

“Henry was on his lunch break then,” Carter said. “He was sitting in the front seat of his Buick with a sandwich.”
