Seven Empty Deposit Envelopes Showed What Was Happening At Carters Diner
Carter walked back inside the diner through the kitchen, his boots squeaking on the wet red tile near the dish station.
He returned to his stool at the end of the counter, ordering a cup of black coffee from Megan.
“We had to let Henry go,” Megan said to a regular customer sitting two stools down.
“He was taking cash right out of the register during the morning shift.”
“Is that right?” the customer said, shaking his head.
“I thought he was a quiet one.”
“The quiet ones are always the ones you have to watch,” Megan said, sliding the coffee cup across the laminate to Carter.
“We found out he was using his supervisor friend to cover his tracks.”
“It’s a good thing Troy caught it before the corporate people got here.”
Carter took a slow sip of the coffee, his eyes fixed on the front window.
He had to let her talk, letting the lies spread for now so that Troy and Megan would feel completely secure in their victory.
If they believed they had successfully blamed Henry, they would not try to alter the digital logs or run before the audit.
