Seven Empty Deposit Envelopes Showed What Was Happening At Carters Diner

“I know you didn’t,” Carter said, opening the blue ledger to the first page of the audit report. “The Springfield police know it, too.”

Henry slowly turned his head, his eyes scanning the columns of numbers, his lower back tightening as he shifted his weight on the vinyl seat.

“Troy and Megan were using your login number,” Carter said, pointing to the column marked with the initials HL. “Every time they voided a cash transaction, they did it under your name while you were out back with the trash.”

“My login,” Henry whispered, his thumb rubbing the side of his index finger. “But I don’t even know how to use the register, Carter.”

“They knew that,” Carter said. “That is why they chose you.”

“They told me they were helping me,” Henry said, looking down at his boots again. “Troy gave me a cup of coffee last Tuesday.”

“It was all part of the show,” Carter said. “They wanted to make sure you didn’t look too closely at the screens.”

“I thought they were finally seeing that I was trying,” Henry said.
