Henry slowly made his way back toward the kitchen door, his old black work shoes sliding slightly on the damp gravel of the alley. Carter watched him go, the heavy metal door clicking shut behind the old man, leaving only the dull hum of the kitchen exhaust fan vibrating in the autumn air.

Carter adjusted his faded blue construction cap, pulling the brim down low over his eyes to keep the midday sun from showing his face too clearly through the diner’s side window. He waited another minute, letting the gravel settle under his boots, before he walked back around to the front entrance and slipped inside to his usual spot on the corner counter stool.
