Seven Empty Deposit Envelopes Showed What Was Happening At Carters Diner

He stared at the blue light reflecting off the laptop screen.

“They are being systematic,” Carter said. “Every time Henry steps away from the floor, Troy is at that terminal.”

“It is more than Troy,” Linda said. “Megan is doing the same thing on the morning shift. Look at this log from eight in the morning.”

A sequence of twelve-dollar breakfast tickets had been voided within minutes of each other.

“She does it when the older couples pay with exact change,” Carter said.

“They think nobody is looking because it is an old diner,” Linda said.

Carter looked down at his faded blue construction cap resting on the library table.

“They aren’t just taking cash, they’re taking his dignity,” Carter said.

Linda did not answer. She closed the laptop screen with a soft click that seemed too loud in the quiet room.

“What is the next step?” she asked.

“I need to see what they are doing with the paper copies,” Carter said.

“They must be throwing them away,” Linda said. “The physical register tape has to match the drawer at the end of the day.”
