Seven Empty Deposit Envelopes Showed What Was Happening At Carters Diner

“And if we miss a month?” Megan asked, her voice cracking as she finally reached for the pen.

“The Springfield police department already has a copy of the register logs,” Carter said, his gravelly voice low and steady. “They are holding the file until the first of December.”

Megan signed her name quickly, her dark ponytail shifting over her shoulder, though she did not look at the paper as she did it.

“We’re done here, then,” Troy said, standing up and sliding his hands into his pockets.

“Leave your keys on the desk,” Linda said.

Troy did not move for a second, then he slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver ring with three keys on it, letting them drop next to the brass register key.

Megan did not have keys to leave. She grabbed her purse from the small plastic chair by the door, her strap catching on the backrest for a second before she yanked it free.

Neither of them looked back as they walked out of the office, their footsteps heavy and quick against the linoleum of the hallway.
