Seven Empty Deposit Envelopes Showed What Was Happening At Carters Diner

Henry paused, his hand hovering over the dish rack. He rubbed his lower back, his fingers pressing into the worn fabric of his trousers.

“I have two more crates of silverware to polish, Troy,” Henry said, his voice formal and polite as always. “The lunch crowd will need them before one.”

“The silverware can wait five minutes,” Troy said.

He turned to the glass pots on the burner and poured a full cup of the premium dark roast, the expensive blend the diner usually reserved for the Sunday morning regulars. He slid the mug across the laminate counter, stopping it right in front of Henry’s hands.

“On the house,” Troy said, leaning forward with his elbows on the counter. “How is that back holding up today?”

Henry stared at the dark liquid, his brow furrowing as if trying to locate the catch in the offer. He looked at Troy, then down at the steam rising from the mug.

“It is a bit stiff today, to tell the truth,” Henry said.

“Well, you just drink that,” Troy said, patting the counter. “We have to look out for our best people.”
