Miller stopped tapping his pencil and wrote a single line on his yellow legal pad.
“It costs three thousand five hundred dollars to bring my team out for an emergency field audit on twenty-four hours’ notice,” Miller said. “And the legal retainer for the local firm is another twelve hundred.”
“I will transfer the funds from my personal savings account by noon,” Carter said.
Linda frowned, looking at him with concern.
“Carter, that’s your roof money for the spring,” Linda said. “The corporate insurance won’t reimburse you for the audit fees if the local manager didn’t authorize it first.”
“The local manager is the one who suspended Henry without a shred of proof,” Carter said.
He walked back to his desk and opened the top drawer, pulling out a clean yellow legal pad.
“I am not letting an innocent man take the fall for a pair of thieves because of corporate protocol,” Carter said.
Miller leaned forward, his wire-rimmed glasses sliding slightly down his nose.
“If we go in at eight tomorrow morning, Troy will have the keys to the register drawer,” Miller said. “What happens if he refuses to open it for us?”
