I turned the key to the left to let the glow plugs warm, watching the red indicator light on the metal dashboard. The only sound in the shed was the nesting sparrows in the eaves and the distant hum of a truck on the state highway.

I turned the key to the right.

The starter gave one deep grunt, and then the four-cylinder diesel engine roared to life with a steady, vibrating thrum that shook the loose dust from the rafters.

I watched the oil pressure needle rise to thirty-five pounds and hold steady.

I engaged the hydraulic lever, watching the three-point hitch at the back of the tractor lift the heavy three-bottom plow with a smooth, silent hiss of fluid. I let the engine idle for ten minutes, listening to the regular cadence of the exhaust, finding no misses and no leaks on the dry concrete floor.

I put the tractor in low gear and backed out into the yard, the big rubber tires turning slowly over the gravel.
