I looked at the routing number, memorizing the first four digits, which matched the Phoenix dummy corporation Agent Santos had told us about.

“Is this the only account the association uses?” I asked.

Brinley nodded once, her eyes fixed on my pen as if she expected me to sign the deed right then.

“It is the only authorized account for our Nebraska holdings,” she said.

Sarah stood up from her chair, her boots clicking on the linoleum, and walked to the narrow basement window that looked out on the alley.

“I believe we have everything we need,” Sarah said, turning back to the table.

The heavy wooden door of the conference room swung open before she could sit down.

Special Agent Patricia Santos walked in first, her dark blue suit pressed and her FBI badge clipped to her belt.

Two federal marshals followed her, their boots making no sound on the thin carpet as they stepped into the small room.

Brinley did not move, but her chin rose an inch as she looked at the badge.

“I am not sure what local administrative issue this is, but we are in the middle of a private legal settlement,” Brinley said.
