A Two Thousand Dollar Nebraska Land Purchase Leads to a Federal Fraud Case
“It is a lie,” I said. “My diesel tank is double-walled and sits fifty yards from the ditch.”
“It does not matter if it is a lie today,” Sarah said. “The judge signed the temporary order. To get it lifted, we have to file a formal response, hire our own certified engineer to test the soil, and schedule an evidentiary hearing.”
She set her glasses back on her nose and looked at me.
“How much will that cost?” I asked.
“Three thousand dollars,” Sarah said. “That is just for the filing fee, the engineering bond, and my minimum hours to prepare the brief.”
I pulled my leather bank book from my coat pocket. My hands were stiff from the cold drive, and I had to count the ledger columns twice. After paying the land auction fee and the five hundred dollar retainer last month, I had exactly three thousand four hundred and twelve dollars left to my name.
“That leaves me with four hundred dollars to buy seed,” I said.
