A Two Thousand Dollar Nebraska Land Purchase Leads to a Federal Fraud Case
Sarah put her glasses back on and leaned forward, her pen poised over her pad. “The Fairmonts have already filed an emergency injunction to stop Arthur from planting his first crop. It will cost him at least three thousand dollars in legal fees just to contest that injunction in state court.”
“I do not have three thousand dollars to throw away on lawyers,” I said, rubbing my palms against my trousers to clear away the cold sweat. “If I cannot turn the soil by the middle of next month, the moisture will be gone from the ground.”
“We do not want you to fight the injunction, Mr. Graham,” Agent Santos said. “Not yet. We want you to let them think they have won.”
I looked from Santos to Sarah, whose face was completely expressionless. “You want me to just fold?”
“We need them to make a direct, written demand for money in exchange for lifting that injunction,” Santos said, her eyes locked on mine. “We need one more clean offense, Arthur, something they cannot explain away to a jury.”
