A Two Thousand Dollar Nebraska Land Purchase Leads to a Federal Fraud Case

“Good neighbors do not demand fifteen thousand dollars on a Tuesday afternoon,” I said.

“Which is exactly why I am here,” she said, leaning against the door frame. “I spoke with our association board this morning. I convinced them to waive the entire fifteen-thousand-dollar assessment. Every penny of it.”

I looked at the oil drum, where the warmth of the fresh rolls was already fogging the plastic wrap over the basket. “Why would they do that?”

“Because we want to find a cooperative resolution,” she said. “We have a small logistical challenge on our southern border. The county road access there is narrow, and the grade is too steep for our construction vehicles. We simply need a standard access easement across your southern fifty feet.”

“An easement,” I said.

“Just a simple right-of-way,” she said, her voice dropping to a comforting, confidential purr. “Just forty yards of dirt road so we can bypass the ravine. If you sign a temporary access agreement, we will wipe your association ledger clean. No fees, no violations, no more certified mail.”
