A Two Thousand Dollar Nebraska Land Purchase Leads to a Federal Fraud Case

“If Brinley wants the southern border that badly, maybe I should just let her have it,” I said, keeping my voice low and tired. “I am thinking about calling her lawyer and asking for a settlement. If she waives the back fees, I might just sign the easement and be done with it.”

“You sure about that?” Thomas asked. “Once you give up that southern access, you cannot get it back.”

“I am too tired to care anymore,” I said. “If you see her or Chadwick, you can tell them I am ready to talk. I just want this over with.”

“I will pass it along,” Thomas said, nodding slowly. “I hate to see you give up, Arthur, but I understand. A man has to protect his own peace.”

I paid two dollars for a bottle of water and walked back to my truck. I knew Thomas would call Brinley before the store closed. In a town this small, news of a man surrender traveled faster than the wind across the flats.
