A Two Thousand Dollar Nebraska Land Purchase Leads to a Federal Fraud Case
“They are neighbors,” I said.
“That Fairmont woman was in here yesterday morning,” Thomas said, tapping his pencil against his teeth. “She bought two hundred dollars’ worth of wild bird seed and wrote a check to the school district for five thousand dollars. She is sponsoring the high school band’s trip to the state competition in March.”
I kept my voice flat. “Five thousand dollars is a lot of money for a band.”
“The school board has been trying to raise that money since August,” Thomas said. “She just walked in, asked the principal what they needed, and signed her name to the check. People around town are talking about how nice it is to have some new blood in the county with a public spirit.”
“She has plenty of spirit,” I said.
“She was asking about you, too,” Thomas said, leaning his forearms on the counter. “Wanted to know how long you had been out here, and if you had any family left in the county. I told her you were as stubborn as an old mule but harmless enough.”
“I appreciate the recommendation,” I said.
