“It is a business,” I said.
“It is a machine,” Sarah corrected, her pen tapping the desk. “And you got caught in the gears because you bought the land they had already targeted.”
“They had the road planned out before I ever saw the auction notice,” I said.
Sarah cleaned her glasses again, her eyes fixed on the empty air between us.
“They spent six months preparing the ground. When you bought it, you became their only obstacle.”
“What happens if they find out Dolores kept the record of their electronic filing?” I asked.
“They will try to shut us down before we can get this to a judge,” Sarah said.
“How much money do we have left to fight them?” I asked.
“The retainer will cover the filings for another week,” Sarah said. “But if they go to court to stop your spring planting, we will need more.”
I stood up from the wooden chair, my knees making a dry, cracking sound in the quiet room.
“I have some savings left from the shop sale,” I said. “Not much, but enough to buy some time.”
