A Two Thousand Dollar Nebraska Land Purchase Leads to a Federal Fraud Case

“She said she wanted to make sure you were taken care of,” Thomas said, his brow furrowing slightly. “Said she was worried about your retirement. She mentioned something about helping you set up a trust so you would not have to worry about the property taxes on that big acreage.”

I felt a cold sensation in the small of my back, like a draft coming through an unlatched cellar door. “She said that?”

“Yes,” Thomas said. “She seemed real concerned. Said it was a shame for an older man to be working that hard on his own after thirty years in the shops.”

“I like the work,” I said.

“I know you do,” Thomas said. “But she made it sound like she was doing you a favor. She is a very polite lady, Arthur. Very polished. You should let her help you with that road work she was talking about.”

I did not answer him. I paid twenty-four dollars for the mineral blocks, took my yellow receipt, and walked out to my truck.
