The clock on Sarah’s wall read exactly ten in the morning when Robert slid a three-page document across the wood.

“This is the final settlement deed, Mr. Graham,” Robert said.

“My client is prepared to waive the remaining five thousand dollars of the original assessment, provided you pay ten thousand dollars today and execute the easement transfer on your southern border.”

I looked at the document, then at the nineteen sixty-seven deed that had stayed clean for over fifty years.

“Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money for a retired mechanic,” I said, keeping my hands flat on my thighs to hide the calluses.

Brinley leaned forward, her voice coming out in that smooth, rapid-fire style she used when she wanted to clear a room.

“It is a standard accommodation, Arthur, and it ends the litigation immediately so you can get back to your little tractor.”

Chadwick whispered something to his wife, his voice low and apologetic, but she brushed his shoulder away without looking at him.

Sarah Finch cleaned her glasses with the hem of her blue shirt, her eyes narrowed as she watched the attorney.
