Three Suitcases Left in the Rain and Nineteen Million Dollars in Cancun

“The guest room at Azure Cove will always be ready for you,” I said.

I leaned in and hugged him, holding him tightly for a long moment. He smelled of the pine soap he had used since he was a boy, a simple, familiar comfort that made my throat tighten. When I stepped back, I climbed into the rear seat of the cab, pulling the heavy door shut behind me.

Nathan stood on the driveway as the taxi began to roll forward, his hand raised in a quiet wave. I watched him through the rear window until the iron gates of the estate closed, blocking the River Oaks house from my view for the last time.

I stood on the stone terrace of the Azure Cove villa, watching the tide roll in over the white sands of Cancun. I had chosen to sell the Houston house and divide the proceeds evenly with Nathan, refusing to let financial bitterness ruin what remained of my relationship with my son. Sable had signed the divorce papers and moved to another state, avoided by the family she had tried to ruin.

I reached down to touch my gold wedding band, feeling the cool metal warm under the Mexican sun.

“I did what you asked, Gordon, and now I am going to rest,” I whispered.

The sound of the ocean waves crashing gently below the villa terrace.
