Three Suitcases Left in the Rain and Nineteen Million Dollars in Cancun

“Sable is handling the restructuring,” he said, his voice trailing off into a whisper. “She said we just need to get through the next two weeks and everything will clear up.”

“Did you authorize a loan on this house three weeks ago?” I asked.

He looked up, his brow furrowing as he pulled his hands out of his pockets. “No. We talked about it, but I told her my credit was too damaged after the warehouse lease fell through. We decided against it.”

I opened the red folder and laid the photocopy of the signature page on his knees. “Then why is your name on this document?”

Nathan picked up the paper, his fingers turning white at the edges. He stared at the signature, his eyes moving back and forth across the line of blue ink. He touched the corner of the paper as if it might be hot.

“This isn’t my handwriting,” he said, his voice dropping to a faint murmur. “I didn’t sign this, Mom. I’ve never even seen this bank’s name before.”
