Three Suitcases Left in the Rain and Nineteen Million Dollars in Cancun

“Your husband knew exactly what he was doing when he left this with me,” Frank said, leaning back in his chair and watching my reaction. “He knew that if the main estate fell into probate, Sable would try to freeze everything to get her hands on the assets.”

“She already has Nathan convinced they are broke,” I said, holding the silver key chain tightly in my fist.

“They are broke, Cassandra, or at least their personal accounts are,” Frank said, adjusting his glasses again. “But this trust is entirely yours, and you must keep it absolutely secret until the probate hearing.”

“Why?” I asked.

“Because the moment Sable suspects you have these assets, she will use Nathan to pressure you to sign them over,” Frank said.

I looked down at the brass disc in my hand, the metal warming against my palm.

“I cannot tell Nathan?” I asked.

“Not yet,” Frank said, his eyes serious and unblinking. “If you tell him, he will tell his wife. He cannot help himself.”

I stood up from the chair, the silver key chain heavy in my hand.
