Sable turned around slowly, holding a wooden spoon in her right hand like a pointer. “We need the space for my new office. And we need the keys to Gordon’s personal safe in the study.”

“I do not have those keys,” I lied.

“The safe keys are on your ring, Cassandra,” Sable said, her voice rising to a sharp, clipped pitch. “We need to inventory the papers tonight.”

I stood up, keeping my hand in my pocket, my fingers wrapped around the silver key chain Frank had given me.

“You are making this much harder than it needs to be,” Sable said, her red nails tapping the granite counter.

I turned toward the hallway without answering, my fingers squeezing the brass disc of the key.

I walked toward my room, slipping the silver key chain into my coat pocket.

The next morning at eight, the hallway was cold. I reached for the brass doorknob of my bedroom, carrying a small stack of folded towels.

Sable stood at the end of the corridor, leaning against the wainscoting with her arms crossed, watching me with her head slightly tilted.
