Three Suitcases Left in the Rain and Nineteen Million Dollars in Cancun

Frank reached into his vest pocket and pulled out the silver key chain Gordon had given him three days before he entered the hospital. He set it on the mahogany table with a soft, metallic clink that seemed to ring through the quiet courtroom.
“The physical title to the Azure Cove villa in Cancun is not part of the probate estate,” Frank said, his voice slow and legalistic. “It has been held in a safety deposit box under my firm’s care since August, as authorized by the primary trust.”
Sable turned her head toward Nathan, her brow furrowing as she stared at the silver key chain on our table. “What villa?”
“The property in Mexico was transferred to Cassandra Reed in full before Gordon Reed’s passing,” Frank continued, ignoring the interruption. “The nineteen million dollars in the private trust is also entirely separate from the probate assets.”
Nathan’s head snapped up, his eyes widening as he looked from Frank to me. “Mom? Nineteen million?”
I did not answer him, keeping my eyes fixed on the empty judge’s bench.
