Three Suitcases Left in the Rain and Nineteen Million Dollars in Cancun
I reached out and picked up the silver key chain, feeling the cold weight of the keys in my palm. They felt like a promise kept from a lifetime ago.
“Is the transfer complete?” I asked.
“All you need to do is sign the deed of trust acceptance,” Frank said, handing me a heavy gold pen. “The villa is yours, Cassandra. The funds are already cleared and waiting in your private account.”
I signed my name at the bottom of the three documents, my hand steady as I wrote. When I finished, Frank took the pen and set the signed pages into a new folder. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small paper sleeve, sliding it across the desk toward me.
“Your flight leaves tomorrow morning from Hobby Airport,” Frank said. “A direct flight to Cancun.”
I looked at the blue logo on the airline ticket, feeling the reality of it settle in.
“Thank you, Frank,” I said. “For keeping his secret.”
“I kept it for Gordon,” Frank said, his voice softening slightly as he adjusted his glasses. “But I also kept it for you.”
