Three Suitcases Left in the Rain and Nineteen Million Dollars in Cancun

“Take your time, Mrs. Reed,” he said, closing the door behind him.

Frank turned the key in the lock and lifted the lid. Inside lay a single, thick manila envelope sealed with red wax, and directly beneath it, a smaller blue folder that had not been opened since the winter before Gordon died.

“This is the Azure Cove title,” Frank said, lifting the manila envelope. “The Mexican registry documents are all attached.”

I reached into the box and lifted the smaller blue folder, opening it to find the original deed to the River Oaks house.

“Sable thought she could burn this,” I said, looking at the faded blue paper.

“She tried,” Frank said. “But Gordon was always three steps ahead of her.”

He set the envelope on the table and looked at me over his glasses. “The district attorney will call you tomorrow morning, Cassandra.”

“I know,” I said.

“They will need your statement regarding the signature on the appraisal document,” Frank said. “The one she used to get the appraiser inside.”

I closed the metal box and pushed it back toward the center of the table.
