A Silver Photo Frame on Our Porch Ended My Fifteen Year Blind Spot
“My career has been sufficiently funded,” I said. “It is your turn to assume the lead role, and I will support it.”
She looked at me for a long time, the silence stretching between us like a physical bridge.
“I have one more adjustment to make tonight,” I said, standing up from the sofa.
I walked out into the central hallway, the hardwood floor cold beneath my socks as I stood in the narrow space.
The hallway was lined with my corporate achievements, each frame carefully leveled and dusted.
There was my leadership award from Mid-Valley Tech, my regional analyst certification, and the framed photo of my corporate team.
I stood in front of the largest frame, the mahogany one containing my master’s degree diploma.
I reached up and lifted the heavy frame off its brass hook.
The wire on the back scraped against the plaster, leaving a small gray mark in the paint.
I carried the framed diploma down to the basement door and set it on the floor behind the frame of the vacuum cleaner.
Then I returned to the kitchen and picked up the silver photo frame that had arrived on our porch.
