A Silver Photo Frame on Our Porch Ended My Fifteen Year Blind Spot

“Why would you need to organize my research, Jordan?” she asked.

The pause after her question was long enough for me to hear the wind pressing against the window screen outside.

“It is a documentation exercise,” I said, trying to keep my voice flat and professional. “I am reviewing our archival files. Do you still have the physical drafts?”

She looked at me for several seconds, her face expressionless, her eyes guarded. She did not ask another question, but her hand stayed tight around her ring.

“They are in the attic,” she said. “In the green trunk behind the old holiday decorations.”

She reached into the ceramic bowl on the counter where we kept the spare keys and pulled out a small brass key.

I stared at the attic key in my hand, knowing I was crossing a line from which I could never return.

The brass teeth of the key bit into my palm as I locked the den door. I spent the next morning executing a recovery plan, determined to stabilize our domestic partnership before the friction began to impact my quarterly performance reviews.
