A Silver Photo Frame on Our Porch Ended My Fifteen Year Blind Spot

Anna came down the stairs first, wearing her faded gray cardigan, her fingers twisting her silver wedding band as she walked. She stopped on the third step when she saw me standing there.

“What is that?” she asked, her voice soft and very quiet.

“It came yesterday,” I said, holding up the silver frame so the glass caught the morning light. “The department sent it.”

She did not reach for it. She looked at the photograph of herself with Dr. Thorne, her face completely expressionless. Her eyes lingered on her own embroidered name on the lab coat before she looked up at me.

“They must have had the wrong address,” she said.

“The shipping label had our current street name, Anna. It was delivered straight to our porch.”

“I have to get Marcus ready for school,” she said, stepping past me without touching the frame.

She went into the kitchen, the door swinging shut behind her with a soft whoosh. I stood in the hallway for several minutes, the silver frame feeling heavier in my hands than it had before.
