A Silver Photo Frame on Our Porch Ended My Fifteen Year Blind Spot
“Is the deposit refundable if the application is declined?” I asked.
“No,” Claire said. She adjusted her glasses again with her middle finger, her eyes fixed on me. “The university considers it an administration fee. And the application requires her original research portfolio. We need her actual drafts, her lab notes, and her letters of reference from ten years ago.”
“She has certificates in a blue folder,” I said, thinking of the document I had found under the floorboards.
“Certificates are just paper, Jordan,” Claire said. “The dean needs to see her mind. He needs to see the actual data she generated before she stopped. He needs to know she still has the capacity for analytical precision.”
The barista called our names, and I stood up to retrieve the tray. When I returned, Claire was looking out the window, her expression unusually quiet.
“There is still a place for her here, Jordan, but she has to want to step back into the light,” Claire said as I set her coffee down.
