A Silver Photo Frame on Our Porch Ended My Fifteen Year Blind Spot

By nine o’clock, the house was silent again. Anna had taken the silver Sienna to drop Marcus off at his elementary school, leaving me with an hour before my first remote status meeting.

I sat at the dining room table with the alumni letter spread out before me. The writer spoke of Anna’s undergraduate research as if it were a major milestone for the university. They asked why she had skipped the panel discussion, offering to host her for a private tour of the new facilities if she ever returned to the campus.

I opened my laptop to check my work email, but the screen felt bright and distracting. My own master’s degree in business administration was framed in our home office, a standard document in a cheap plastic frame I bought at an office supply store.

I walked out to the garage, where the air was cold and smelled of lawn fertilizer and motor oil. I located the large blue plastic storage tub labeled College Keepsakes in black marker.
