“It was a long time ago,” she said, her voice barely audible over the hum of the house.
“It was the money that built my career,” I said. “Every promotion, every salary increase, every professional milestone I claimed for myself was funded by your grant.”
I looked down at my hands, realizing how thin my own achievements looked compared to what she had given up.
“You paid for my future ten years ago, Anna, and it is time I paid you back,” I said.

“I did not want you to know,” she said, her voice trembling.
“Why?” I asked, leaning forward. “Why would you hide something like that from me for ten years?”
“Because I wanted you to feel successful,” she said, her voice cracking as she looked back at me. “I wanted you to believe you did it on your own because I knew how much your pride mattered to you.”
“My pride was based on a lie,” I said. “I lived on your credit while you stayed in the background.”
