“A stipend of thirty-eight thousand,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper that barely reached the edge of the kitchen.

I checked my wristwatch, the metal strap cold against my skin. It was exactly 11:12 PM.

“The department has a high resource allocation this year,” I said, setting the mugs in the sink with a soft, careful clatter.

“This is not a charity offer, Anna,” I said. “Dr. Sterling reviewed your academic history and made a logical decision.”

She looked up, her gaze moving slowly from the paper to my face, her expression unreadable under the bright kitchen light.

“My academic history is ten years out of date, Jordan,” she said, pausing slightly between her words as she always did when she felt cornered.

“The dean disagrees,” I said, resting my hands on the edge of the counter. “He believes your core competency remains entirely intact.”

She walked over to the counter, her steps light and cautious, as if she were navigating a room full of fragile scientific glassware.

She set the letter next to our chipped green ceramic mixing bowl, aligning the edges with the tile pattern on the counter.
