A Silver Photo Frame on Our Porch Ended My Fifteen Year Blind Spot

The doorbell rang at exactly ten minutes to seven on Tuesday evening.

Anna stood by the kitchen island, her hands holding a platter of roasted chicken, her fingers perfectly still. She had no idea who was standing on the front porch. I had kept the logistics of this evening under strict operational security, knowing she would have managed to decline the invitation if she had known the roster.

“Jordan,” she said, her voice dropping into that quiet, measured register. “Are we expecting a delivery at this hour?”

“Not a delivery,” I said, adjusting my collar as I walked past her toward the front hallway. “A critical stakeholder review.”

I opened the heavy oak door to find Claire Vance standing under the porch light, her glasses sliding down her nose. Beside her stood Dr. Victoria Sterling, the dean of the university science department, wearing a tailored charcoal wool coat and carrying a leather briefcase.

“Jordan, hello,” Claire said, her words rushing out in a single breath. “We took the bypass to avoid the bridge construction, which saved us approximately twelve minutes of transit time.”

She adjusted her glasses with her middle finger as she finished speaking.
