A Silver Photo Frame on Our Porch Ended My Fifteen Year Blind Spot
She did not move from the bookshelf, her shadow long and dark against the floral wallpaper.
“What changed?” she asked. “Why did you suddenly decide to go to the dean behind my back?”
I took a deep breath, my chest tightening as I looked at her wedding band.
“I visited the university registrar last week,” I said, my voice cracking slightly before I could stop it.
She did not speak, her body perfectly still as she waited for me to continue.
“I requested the financial records from ten years ago,” I said. “The files concerning your original scientific grant.”
Anna’s fingers stopped moving against the paper, her shoulders tensing as she stared at me.
“I requested the ledger,” I said. “The twelve thousand dollar grant.”
The room was completely silent, the only sound the faint, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall.
“You authorized the transfer of that entire sum directly to my business school tuition account,” I said.
She pulled her silver wedding band up to her knuckle, then let it slide back down, her eyes dropping to the rug.
