William Edwards Leaves His Screaming Son on a Friday Afternoon in Hartford

“Mrs. Edwards,” the judge said. “Where is the child’s passport?”

Marsha looked at her attorney, Bradley, who was staring down at his yellow legal pad.

“It is in a safe place,” Marsha said.

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the blue folder, handing it to Karen.

“Your Honor,” Karen said, stepping toward the bench. “Mr. Edwards recovered the child’s passport yesterday from Sue Melton’s home, where it was being hidden.”

Marsha’s eyes went wide, her mouth opening slightly as she saw the blue booklet in Karen’s hand.

Judge Geller took the passport, opening it to the photo page before looking back down at Marsha.

“This court will not permit a child to be shipped out of state under these fraudulent conditions,” the judge said, his voice rising in anger.

He picked up his wooden gavel and held it an inch above the desk.

“The temporary emergency custody order granted to Sue Melton is hereby voided,” Judge Geller said, bringing the gavel down with a sharp, heavy crack. “Sole physical custody of Owen Edwards is returned immediately to his father.”
