William Edwards Leaves His Screaming Son on a Friday Afternoon in Hartford
Judge Geller turned a page of the file, the paper making a dry scraping sound.
“Is there any evidence of immediate danger to the child in the father’s custody, Mr. Bradley?” the judge asked.
“The danger is the father’s mental instability, Your Honor,” Bradley said, sitting down.
Karen Gable stood up slowly, her dark suit jacket buttoned, her face completely flat. She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a single sheet of paper, slide-locking her pen before she spoke.
“Your Honor, we would like to present Exhibit A,” Karen said, her voice cool and level. “This is a carbon receipt for twelve thousand dollars, drawn from a joint savings account on the morning of October twelfth.”
Marsha’s hand stopped tapping.
“The receipt shows a cashier’s check made out to New Horizons Academy,” Karen said, walking toward the bench. “And it is co-signed by Marsha Edwards and her mother, Sue Melton.”
Judge Geller took the paper, his eyes moving quickly across the lines.
“Mr. Bradley,” the judge said, his voice dropping an octave. “What is the twelve thousand dollars for?”
