William Edwards Leaves His Screaming Son on a Friday Afternoon in Hartford
Sue stepped down from the stand, her eyes fixed on me as she passed, her teeth clenched so hard her jaw muscles twitched.
“Your Honor,” Karen said, “we call Marsha Edwards.”
Marsha walked to the stand with her head held high, her designer bag sliding onto her shoulder as she took the oath.
“Mrs. Edwards,” Karen said, standing by our table. “You told your husband that the twelve thousand dollars was a deposit for a local private kindergarten, is that correct?”
“It was a standard preparatory school,” Marsha said, her voice sharp and clipped.
Karen walked back to her briefcase and pulled out a glossy blue brochure, its edges slightly creased.
“This is the enrollment contract for New Horizons Academy in Bonners Ferry, Idaho,” Karen said, holding it up. “It is signed by you and Sue Melton, dated three weeks ago.”
Marsha did not flinch, but her gaze locked onto the glossy paper.
“The contract states the twelve thousand dollars is a non-refundable deposit for an intensive behavioral boot camp,” Karen said. “It also states that once the child is enrolled, the parents surrender all visitation rights for the first ninety days.”
