William Edwards Leaves His Screaming Son on a Friday Afternoon in Hartford

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Karen Gable’s office number.

Her assistant put me through after a short delay.

“William,” Karen said, her voice sharp and rapid over the line. “Did you find the financial records?”

“I found the contract,” I said, my voice dropping to a soft whisper as a group of students walked past my car. “It is not a kindergarten, Karen. It is a behavioral camp in Idaho.”

“What is the start date on the paperwork?” she asked.

“This Friday morning,” I said, adjusting my wire-rimmed glasses with a trembling finger. “They have already paid the twelve thousand dollars. The safe in our bedroom is empty.”

I heard the rapid, rhythmic clicking of her silver pen through the receiver.

“She is planning to put him on a plane to Idaho this Friday morning,” I said, repeating the words that had been running through my head all morning.

“This is an illegal parental relocation plot,” Karen said, her tone hardening. “If she gets him out of Connecticut and into an unlicensed facility in Idaho, the local courts will lose immediate jurisdiction.”
