William Edwards Leaves His Screaming Son on a Friday Afternoon in Hartford

Marsha’s attorney, a tall man named Bradley with a sharp nose and a voice that carried to the back of the room, stood up and cleared his throat.

“Your Honor, our emergency motion is clear,” Bradley said, pointing to the blue folder on his desk. “We have a father with a documented history of severe childhood instability, a man who spent his formative years shuffled through the state foster system.”

I adjusted my thin wire-rimmed glasses, my hand shaking just enough to rattle the frames.

“William Edwards is a community college instructor who cannot provide the structured environment this child desperately needs,” Bradley continued, turning to look directly at me. “His own background makes him highly volatile, and his reaction to standard maternal discipline has been nothing short of irrational.”

Karen Gable, my attorney, did not look up from her legal pad. She simply clicked her silver pen, the metallic sound sharp in the quiet room.

“Mr. Edwards has spent years hiding his psychological fragility behind a teaching certificate,” Bradley said, his voice rising. “The mother, Marsha Edwards, and the grandmother, a highly decorated military nurse, are simply trying to protect five-year-old Owen from a chaotic domestic environment.”
