“Mr. Webb,” David said, his voice slow and even as he let the silence settle. “We are here to discuss the outstanding obligations of Webb Consulting, specifically the three hundred thousand dollars in liabilities that Clare has recently acquired.”
Marcus laughed, a short, sharp sound that didn’t reach his eyes. “Acquired? Clare signed the final debt clearance agreement two weeks ago. The personal guarantees are paid. The bank has confirmed the wire transfers.”
“She paid the bank, yes,” David said, placing his glasses back on his nose. “But she did not pay them on your behalf as a gift.”
Evelyn leaned forward, the three strands of her pearl necklace shifting against her blouse. “Clare, we have already discussed how grateful we are for your help in resolving Marcus’s temporary cash flow issues. Surely we do not need to drag this out in a bank office.”
I straightened my wristwatch, aligning the leather band with the small bone in my wrist.
“We are here because of the green ledger, Evelyn,” I said, my voice structured and calm. “The one Marcus kept in his desk drawer.”
