Paying three hundred thousand dollars of debt before being ordered out of the house

“We should plan a trip,” Marcus said, leaning across the polished wood toward me. “Once this final debt is paid, Clare, you and I are going to take a long trip to the coast.”

“That sounds nice,” I said, keeping my voice flat.

“We need to get away from Richmond for a while,” he said, his eyes wide and eager. “Just the two of us, once the final Broad Street bank transfer is complete.”

“We have several legal documents to review before we can think about traveling,” I said.

“It is practically done,” Marcus said. “We just need to execute the final clearance agreement.”

I noted the phrase. I had already spent the afternoon drafting a new corporate agreement with David, one that would quietly transfer Marcus’s corporate shares to me the moment he signed.

“I will prepare the paperwork tomorrow,” I said.

“Excellent,” Marcus said. “I knew we could get through this together.”

Evelyn stood up, smoothing her beige skirt. “It is getting very late, and the drive back to Goochland is dark,” she said.
