I straightened my wristwatch, pulling the leather strap until the metal pin clicked into the tightest notch. My hand remained steady, though my skin felt suddenly cold under the fluorescent lights.
“We need a certified verification from the title office,” I said.
“I scheduled an appointment for two o’clock,” David said, checking his watch. “Robert at Commonwealth Title is waiting for you.”
The office of Commonwealth Title was located on the third floor of a brick building near the Broad Street bank. Robert, a quiet examiner with silver hair and a neat blue tie, spread three large ledger sheets across his desk. He adjusted a small brass lamp to illuminate the center column.
“The Elmwood property has a clean title history up until October,” Robert said, tracing a line with a yellow pencil. “But the current registration is quite clear.”
“Confirm the owner for me, Robert,” I said.
“The Evelyn Webb Family Trust is the sole owner of record,” Robert said, looking at me over his reading glasses. “The transfer was completed and filed correctly under Virginia law.”
“And the outstanding line of credit?” I asked.
