Paying three hundred thousand dollars of debt before being ordered out of the house

“We are finally seeing the end of this difficult period,” Marcus said, looking across the table at his mother. “Clare has been absolutely incredible through all of this.”

“She really has,” Evelyn said, her smile returning as she looked at me. “We are so grateful for everything you have sacrificed to keep this beautiful house in our family, Clare.”

“Once the final seventy thousand is paid next week, we will be completely clear,” Marcus said.

“The listing agent was very impressed with how we kept the landscaping on the Elmwood property,” Evelyn said, taking a slow sip of her tea.

The dining room went completely silent. Marcus cleared his throat quickly, his hand moving to his water glass as he rotated his ring.

“Evelyn is talking about her own property in Goochland,” he said, his voice rising slightly.

“Of course,” Evelyn said, her smile freezing for a split second before she nodded. “My own listing.”

“Right,” I said, looking from Marcus to his mother. There was no listing on the Goochland property; they had lived in that house for thirty years and had no plans to move.
