Marine Returns From Okinawa to Find Her Bungalow Already Sold

Sarah set the box down on the hood of her truck. Inside were three rolls of painter’s tape and two cans of interior latex paint, the labels marked with a soft beige color.

“We can start on the living room tomorrow morning,” she said.

“Tomorrow is fine,” I said.

My father walked out from the side yard, carrying an old red metal toolbox that had his name stenciled on the side in faded white letters. He set the box in the trunk of his Buick, the metal clanging against the spare tire.

He closed the trunk lid with a dull thud.

I watched his old Buick pull away from the curb, knowing it was the last time he would ever park in my driveway.

The morning dampness was still clinging to the porch steps when Sarah arrived with the scraping tools. She carried a five-gallon bucket filled with metal scrapers, two wire brushes, and three rolls of heavy-duty painter tape. Her truck door closed with a solid, metallic click that echoed down Maggie Street, the sound clean and familiar in the early light.
