“If she is willing to testify,” Vance said. “Most county employees do not like admitting their official tools were compromised.”

He leaned back, the plastic motel chair creaking under his weight.

He pointed to the diagram of the transaction flow he had sketched.

“We need to establish the money trail first,” he said. “If we can prove where the funds came from to pay off your mortgage, we prove the fraud.”

“I can get that from the bank,” I said.

“The manager at Southern Heritage will not talk to a military lawyer without a warrant,” Vance said. “But you are the primary account holder.”

He slid a blank authorization form across the laminated wood of the desk.

“Go there today,” he said. “Do not mention Benson, and do not mention your father.”

I signed my name at the bottom of the form, my hand steady despite the sour taste of the motel tea.

“What if they already closed the account?” I asked.

Vance did not look up from his legal pad.
