“The school district called me about my background check,” Emily said, her voice soft and hurried. “They said there is a dispute on my address.”

“We are looking into the transaction,” I said, sitting on the steps beside her. “I need to know exactly what Benson told you when you bought the place.”

“Did you know that the title was clouded when you bought the house?” I asked.

“No,” Emily said, looking at me with wide, frightened eyes. “I thought it was a clean sale. Benson told me this was a standard probate sale, and I trusted him.”

“A probate sale requires a court clerk’s signature,” I said.

“He told me the owner was an elderly lady who died in a home in Mobile,” Emily said, her knuckle turning white against her mug. “He said the family wanted to sell it quickly to avoid the inheritance taxes, and that is why they wanted cash.”

“Why did you agree to cash?” I asked.
