“Then go when he is there,” Sarah said. “Confront him. Demand to see the physical paper. If he has nothing to hide, he will show it to you.”
“And if he refuses?”
“Then we know he is hiding something bigger than a mistake,” she said. “Did the clerk say anything else about the stamp?”
“She said Clara Higgins worked at Benson’s office,” I said. “The settlement agent who handled the transfer to Benson Holdings.”
Sarah frowned, her fork hovering over her plate. “Benson has been doing off-market cash sales in this town for twenty years. My uncle used him for a commercial lease once and said the paperwork looked like a middle-school art project.”
“I need to see what my father has in his desk,” I said, sliding the key across the table and leaving it there. “But I will do it when he is home. I want him to look me in the eye when he explains it.”
