Family Landlords Raise the Rent to Force One Sister Out

“Come in,” I said, stepping back to let him into the warm room. “The coffee is fresh.”

He stepped inside, wiping his boots carefully on the small coconut-coir mat I had placed by the sill, then looked around the small space with a quiet, approving nod.

“The light is good here,” he said, setting the folder on the kitchen counter. “Even on a gray morning like this one.”

“The morning is quiet here, and that is all I ever wanted,” I said, pouring a second mug of coffee from the glass carafe.

He took the mug, his thumb brushing the ceramic rim as he set it down next to the layouts.

“Your mother called the agency line yesterday afternoon,” Keith said, his tone dropping into the clipped, factual delivery he used during client reviews. “She wanted to know if we had your current residential address on file for tax purposes.”

I stopped with the sugar spoon halfway to my cup, the white crystals spilling back into the bowl.

“What did you tell her?” I asked.
